TEMPTATION AND COLLEGE LIFE

  • Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity (1 Timothy 4:12).
  • The temptations which Satan throws at everyone are too numerous to mention. All of them are deadly.  Every day we need the strength of our Savior who defeated Satan on the cross and gave us the victory of forgiveness. College students need to be on guard against the attacks Satan will direct towards them. He tempts college students to…
  • Neglect of the means of grace and grow apathetic toward the Word
  • Misuse God’s name.
  • Maintain a self-righteous arrogance over against others.
  • Use offensive language that degrades the body and sexuality or men and women in general.
  • Waste and misuse the time God has given them.
  • Engage in sexual activity before marriage.
  • Get drunk or high on illegal drugs.
  • Break the government’s drinking age laws
  • Cause strife, envy, hate and hold grudges
  • Break laws established by the civil authorities.
  • Steal from others
  • Steal from God through wasting one’s own material resources.
  • Want things you can’t or shouldn’t have.
  • Lust and commit adultery through pornography and sexual fantasy.
  • Cheat in school or at work
  • Hold the oppressive attitudes of male chauvinism or unscriptural feminism.
  • Misuse or neglect food.
  • Gossip and slander.
  • Wallow in self-indulgence so that others and their needs are far from your thoughts and even farther from your help.
  • Fail to take things in the kindest possible way.
  • Over-react to situations and become accusatory and resentful
  • Refuse to be patient and long-suffering with your neighbors
  • If someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.  Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.  If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.  Each one should test his own actions.  Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load (Galatians 6:1-5).

PRINCIPLES GOVERNING SOCIAL LIFE

Students are expected to live in a God-pleasing way both on and off campus. Paul provides the instruction when he says of himself, “the life I live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

MLC desires a student’s life to be full, rich, and Christ-centered.

All Christians experience the struggle between the saint and sinner within them. Thanks be to God––in Christ we have the victory in this struggle!

The new self in Christ wants to love God and people perfectly. The old self actively hates what is good and pursues evil. A balanced proclamation of law and gospel is at the center of the college’s message to young people.

The Holy Spirit does his work through the hearing and studying of God’s Word and enables Christians to resist temptation and please God for Jesus’ sake.

God’s grace in Christ develops God-pleasing responsibility and self-discipline and godly living in all Christians.

God’s grace rescues and comforts us when we come face to face with our own sinful failings and fallings. God picks us up again through the forgiveness of sin won for us by Christ Jesus.  In that gracious forgiveness we find motivation and power to strive for quiet godly living all the more!
