FINANCIAL AID PROCESS GUIDE
Set Good Study Skills
Make academics a priority and schedule time to work on homework without distractions. If you have difficulty with a subject you are studying, utilize the resources available through the Academic Success Center. Working hard may even help you qualify for an academic scholarship.
Proverbs 16:3 “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will be established.”
Engage in Campus Life
Utilize the many opportunities to get involved in campus life. You can further develop your leadership skills through various opportunities, not to mention make some lasting friendships. These are a sample of some of the additional ways you can use your God-given talents on campus:
- Student Senate
- Organized Groups
- Drama
- Intramurals
We have different gifts, according to the grace God has given us. If the gift is prophecy, do it in complete agreement with the faith. If it is serving, then serve. If it is teaching, then teach. If it is encouraging, then encourage. If it is contributing, be generous. If it is leadership, be diligent. If it is showing mercy, do it cheerfully.
Find Employment
If you are unable to balance a part-time job during the academic year, plan on maximizing your summer earning potential. Set a goal for the amount you want to earn in order to offset the cost of your education. Remember, this time is temporary (a few months of your life) but loans take years to repay.
Apply for Scholarships
Scholarships are a great way to help offset the cost of college. Utilizing a scholarship search tool will help narrow down the scholarships applicable for you. Review the requirements carefully and modify your essay or application for each specific one. Check the scholarship opportunities available at MLC and apply each year if you qualify. Don’t forget to check with your church and ask if they participate in the Congregational Partner Grant Program.
Make a Plan
Talk as a family about the available funding for college. Make sure everyone is on the same page about the amount each person can reasonably contribute to college.
More than 95% of the students at MLC utilize financial aid to help cover tuition, room, and board expenses.
Financial aid includes many different types of aid: grants, scholarships, loans, military benefits. To determine what aid you are eligible to receive, you will need to complete the FAFSA each year.
Once you apply for financial aid, you will be contacted from the financial aid office about any awards that you will receive. The financial aid award will help reduce the amount of money you need to pay for your education.
Don’t miss any deadlines. Financial aid deadlines can be different from school to school, so make sure you know when things need to be submitted.
