MLC Scholarship Opportunities

Below are the scholarship opportunities for enrolled students during the 2022-2023 academic year. Please note specific deadlines and application information.

We will be accepting applications for the 2023-2024 academic year in August 2023. Watch this page for application deadlines and information.

Students that receive a designated MLC scholarship will be asked to write a letter of appreciation (thank you letter).

Students that do not write this letter of appreciation within the designated time frame will forfeit their eligibility for any future MLC scholarship opportunities (excluding merit scholarships and need-based grants).

Precht Family Scholarship

Amount: $500 renewable for 3 years
Requirements: Incoming first-year students with a GPA of 3.75 or better
DEADLINE: This scholarship has been awarded for the 22-23 academic year. Please check back after August 1, 2023 for the 23-24 academic year submission deadline.

MLC Auxiliary Scholarship

Amount: $750 renewable for 3 years
Requirements: Incoming first-year students with a GPA of 3.75 or better
DEADLINE: This scholarship has been awarded for the 22-23 academic year. Please check back after August 1, 2023 for the 23-24 academic year submission deadline.

Estimated amount: $1650
Requirements: Staff Ministry or Pastoral Ministry students who have dependent children, who are in good academic standing, and have unique gifts to be used in God’s kingdom.

Conrad Frey Memorial Scholarship

Estimated amount: $1350 – four recipients selected
Requirements: Students graduating this academic year (2022-2023) majoring in Education or Pre-Seminary with a minimum 3.0 GPA with participation in facets of MLC student life.

Ruth Preston Lehmann Scholarship

Estimated amount: $1100 – two recipients selected
Requirements: Female student graduating this academic year (2021-2022), who has a minimum 3.75 GPA.

Victor F. Voecks Scholarship

Estimated amount: $2050
Requirements: Student must be returning as a student in 2023-2024 (current sophomore, junior, senior that will not graduate this year) majoring in Education with a minimum 3.0 GPA with participation in facets of MLC student life.
DEADLINE: This scholarship has been awarded for the 22-23 academic year. Please check back after August 1, 2023 for the 23-24 academic year submission deadline.

Marjorie E. Toepel Scholarship

Estimated amount: $600-800 – depending on the number of recipients (4 or 5)
Requirements: Students who have completed one year at MLC (current sophomore, junior, or senior) who demonstrate strong ability to preach or teach the gospel and an interest in church music. While all WELS students are eligible, the scholarships will be evaluated and awarded according to the following prioritization:
1) Members of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Howard’s Grove, WI
Members of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Wausau, WI
Members of Christ-St. Peter Lutheran Churches, Milwaukee, WI
2) Students from the Manitowoc Conference of the Northern Wisconsin District
3) Students from a current or former WELS world missionary family

Herman & Antonia Lehmann Prize

Estimated amount: $700
Requirements: Student graduating this academic year (2022-2023) with a minimum 3.75 GPA.

Service to God and Country Scholarship

Total estimated funding for 2022-2023: $10,000 divided between eligible recipients based on need.
Requirements: Previous or current military service with any branch of the armed forces. Students whose parent has served in the armed forces are also eligible for scholarship funds. Eligible recipients must have demonstrated financial need (FAFSA form on file).
DEADLINE: This scholarship has been awarded for the 22-23 academic year. Please check back after August 1, 2023 for the 23-24 academic year submission deadline.

Lutheran Military Support Group (LMSG) Scholarship

Estimated amount: $200

Estimated amount: $2500 – four recipients selected
Requirements: Sophomore student who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrated leadership

MLC Music Scholarships

Estimated amount: $500-$1750 depending on the specific scholarship
Requirements: Please see specific information for each scholarship below:
01) Martin Albrecht Music Scholarship: Education, Pre-Seminary, Parish Music student(s) with music & leadership abilities. Congratulations to our 2022-2023 recipient, Meg Stangl!
02) Bingenheimer Music Scholarship: Education, Pre-Seminary, Parish Music student with interest in serving in music ministry. Congratulations to our 2022-2023 recipients, Joseph Panning and Bethany Valleau!
03) Dr. Roy and Ruth Breiling Organ Scholarship: Parish Music with 2 semesters of organ.
04) Engel Music Scholarship: Education, Pre-Seminary, or Parish Music student(s) with special talent and potential to serve in music ministry. Congratulations to our 2022-2023 recipients, Benjamin Foster and Hope Sulzle!

06) Pastor Joel W. and Margaret A. Prange Organ Music Scholarship: All majors; sophomore students who completed organ instruction for two semesters of their freshman year. Congratulations to our 2022-2023 recipients

08) Amy Marlene Smith Music Scholarship: Education, Pre-Seminary, or Parish Music student(s) with interest in serving in music ministry and financial need. Congratulations to our 2022-2023 recipients, Samantha Bjerke and Colin Kruger!
09) Howard Wessel Music Scholarship: Stand-alone/Single undergraduate Elementary Education Major with financial need that has an interest in serving in music ministry and has organ playing ability. Congratulations to our 2022-2023 recipient, Leah Kuchenbecker!
10) General Music Scholarship: Education, Pre-Seminary, or Parish Music student(s) with a potential to serve in WELS music ministries. Congratulations to our 2022-2023 recipient, Alicia Mengel!

Zachary Krzmarzick Music Scholarship

Estimated amount: $1000
Requirements: Undergraduate students who are active in music as evidenced by participation in a choir, band, or by taking individual lessons (voice, organ, piano, or another instrument)

Grefe Family Scholarship

Estimated amount: $1000 –two recipients selected
Requirements: Student majoring in special education who has completed a minimum of 2 years (or 4 semesters) at MLC and is in need of financial assistance.

Meilahn P. Zahn Scholarship

Estimated amount: $500-1500 (depending on the number of awards given)
Requirements: Undergraduate students who demonstrate God-given abilities in music through the creation of a work that promotes Lutheran worship and/or Lutheran music education. The work may be musical, textual, visual, pedagogical, or technological.
DEADLINE: This scholarship has been awarded for the 22-23 academic year. Please check back after August 1, 2023 for the 23-24 academic year submission deadline.

The selection committee retains the right not to award a prize if the submissions do not rise to the required level of excellence.

Bill & Jerry Patterson Grant

Total estimated funding for 2022-2023: $3000 divided between eligible recipients based on need.
Requirements: Married Pre-Seminary student who is either non-traditional/second career (previous life/work experience) or has children.
DEADLINE: This scholarship has been awarded for the 22-23 academic year. Please check back after August 1, 2023 for the 23-24 academic year submission deadline.

Reverend Philipp & Elenore Lehmann Scholarship

Estimated amount: $1750* renewable junior and senior years subject to the student’s continued participation in music
*Scholarship amount could change in the future based on the number of recipients and the available funding.
Requirements: Pre-Seminary Freshman who is active in music (participation in a choir, band, or individual lessons).
The scholarship is awarded beginning of the sophomore year.
DEADLINE: This scholarship has been awarded for the 22-23 academic year. Please check back after August 1, 2023 for the 23-24 academic year submission deadline.

This scholarship will be dispersed in the 2023-2024 school year.
