The Minnesota State Grant is a financial aid program designed to assist students from low- and moderate-income families pay for educational expenses at eligible Minnesota colleges and universities. Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a Minnesota resident
  • Be a graduate of a secondary school (or equivalent) or at least 17 years of age
  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate for at least three credits at one of the eligible schools in Minnesota
  • Full-Time Status: To receive the full amount of the Minnesota State Grant, you must be a full-time student (registered for at least 15 credits per term).
  • Part-Time Status: Part-time Minnesota students are eligible for a prorated Minnesota State Grant, provided they are enrolled in at least three credits per term.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA is used to determine your financial need for the Minnesota State Grant, Federal Pell Grant, and other aid.
  2. Complete the MLC Minnesota State Grant Application. You will need your MLC Portal credentials to log in.

Application Deadline:

To be eligible for the Minnesota State Grant, you must submit your application within 30 days after the start of the academic term. Students must complete both the FAFSA and the MLC Minnesota State Grant Application annually to maintain eligibility.
