Applying for Financial Aid
US Citizens and Eligible Non-US Citizens,
follow the steps below:
The 2026-2027 FAFSA will be made available to all students by October 1, 2025.
Application Deadline is the same as Tax Day
Any student applying for financial aid will need to submit application information to the financial aid office by APRIL 15, 2025.
Students applying for spring semester only have a deadline of NOVEMBER 1, 2025.
What is the FSA ID?
The FSA ID is your electronic signature when logging into the Federal Student Aid website. To submit a FAFSA, both a student and a parent must have a separate FSA ID created. The FSA ID includes both a username and a password that should be linked to a personal email address and cell phone number.
What is the FAFSA?
The FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the form that determines your eligibility for federal student aid and grant aid from MLC. The financial information entered on the form will generate the Student Aid Index (SAI) which is an index that helps determine eligibility for federal, state and institutional aid.
MLC Federal School Code: 002361
Domestic students will submit both the FAFSA and the MLC Financial Aid Application. Although this form is basically contact information, it also includes the MN State Grant Application on the back side for students either graduating from a MN high school or residents of MN.
Federal Verification
Many students receive follow-up contact requesting additional documents. The government selects certain files for the Federal Verification process to ensure that federal aid is distributed to those who are eligible. It is not necessarily an indication that information was entered incorrectly. It is a system in place to double check information that is submitted on the FAFSA.
Financial Aid Award
Students will be notified by email when their financial aid award is complete. The email will direct students to go to their Net Partner Account. Your financial aid award can consist of a combination of:
How does an outside scholarship affect my financial aid?
An outside scholarship may affect your overall financial aid because it is considered financial aid and all of your financial aid combined cannot exceed the total cost of attendance. If you receive a scholarship that would cause your aid to be greater than the cost of attendance, we are required to reduce part of your financial aid award in order to adhere to federal student aid regulations. We will reduce any self-help aid first (loans and then work-study). If you still have more grants and scholarships than the cost of attendance, we would then be required to reduce MLC institutional aid.
