Set Good Study Skills
If you build good study habits now, that will help you to be successful in college – and may even help you receive some valuable academic scholarships. Make academics a priority and schedule time to work on homework without distractions.

AP Courses
AP (Advanced Placement) courses can help give you both an academic boost and save you money. You can earn college credit if you score a 3 or 4 on an AP exam. That means you can take less credits while at college and possibly, with enough AP courses, even graduate early.
- Check with each college to see how the credits will transfer.
- If the credits don’t transfer for your major, they should count towards elective credits.
- A higher score may count for two courses!
- For example: a score of 4 on AP English Literature & Comp counts towards MLC Rhetoric and Composition AND Literature Seminar
Get Involved
High school is a great time to start developing your leadership skills. Find opportunities to serve at school, in the community, or at your church. There are even scholarship opportunities for different types of leadership. Developing leadership skills will help you utilize your God-given talents and learn to serve in various ways.
We have different gifts, according to the grace God has given us. If the gift is prophecy, do it in complete agreement with the faith. If it is serving, then serve. If it is teaching, then teach. If it is encouraging, then encourage. If it is contributing, be generous. If it is leadership, be diligent. If it is showing mercy, do it cheerfully.
Future Job Ideas
It is fun to start thinking about jobs you might like to have in the future. Maybe you want to work with animals and be a veterinarian, work with your hands and be an electrician, or work in a classroom teaching the next generation about Jesus. You can start learning about different jobs and careers now and see what they are like. Just remember – whatever kind of job you choose is an opportunity to serve the Lord with your gifts! Consider your interests and strengths and make notes as you explore your options.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
College Programs
Once you know what kind of job you want to pursue, start looking for the schools that offer those programs. You can use a search to find different training opportunities based on the program you choose.

Find Employment
Just like everything, the best way to pay for anything is with actual money. Start saving a portion of your income now to help pay for college in the future.
If you can’t work during the school year – that’s okay! Maximize your earning potential during the summer.
If you have a college fund started, you can add some of your income from each paycheck.
Apply for Scholarships
Scholarships are a great way to help offset the cost of college. Utilizing a scholarship search tool will help narrow down the scholarships applicable for you. Review the requirements carefully and modify your essay or application for each specific one. Check in your community and with your college guidance counselor for local opportunities. Don’t forget to check with your church, if you plan to pursue ministry at MLC.

Make a Plan
Start estimating costs for college. Use a Net Price Calculator to estimate your financial aid at each school you are considering. Talk as a family about the available funding for college. Make sure everyone is on the same page about the amount each person can reasonably contribute to college.
More than 95% of the students at MLC utilize financial aid to help cover tuition, room, and board expenses.
Financial aid includes many different types of aid: grants, scholarships, loans, military benefits. To determine what aid you are eligible to receive, you will need to complete the FAFSA.
Once you apply for financial aid, you will be contacted from the financial aid office about any awards that you will receive. The financial aid award will help reduce the amount of money you need to pay for your education.
Don’t miss any deadlines. Financial aid deadlines can be different from school to school, so make sure you know when things need to be submitted.
