What will the college experience look like?
College is not only the campus of buildings or the courses taken – it is the environment where you will be immersed for several years while pursuing a degree. It is a time for lasting friendships and personal growth but it is also an important time to stay connected to your Savior and strengthen your faith.
At Martin Luther College, our goal is to provide an engaging environment with all of the activities at a larger university with a more personal feel. You can get involved in music, athletics, various clubs and even find some time for a part-time job. It all depends on what you hope to do and experience during your college years.
In the Christ-centered atmosphere of MLC, you’ll grow more and more into your best self, as you’re strengthened by the Word, supported by loyal friends, and encouraged by our dedicated faculty.
Let us help you develop your special gifts and discover your own path of service to your Lord and your church through life at MLC
Clear expectations (who covers what?)
Financing a college education takes planning and preparation and a clear understanding of what family resources are available.
- Discuss the financial obligation of the student and any funding that parents or grandparents may be able to provide.
- Ulitize MLC’s Net-Price Calculator which provides an estimate of the student’s costs and aid available.
- If student loans will be a necessity for your family, make sure your student realizes the long-term implications for borrowing loan funds and paying interest.
- Understand which loans to utilize first to get the best interest-rate and terms.
- If parents will help cover some expenses but there is an understanding that the student will pay parents back in the future for this help, make sure this is clearly stated and written down to make sure everyone is on the same page.
It can be difficult to talk about money and finances as a family but it is an important part of the college planning process.
Can parents afford to help?
If parents hope to contribute to the college expenses for their students, know what options are available. College savings plans are available and are more effective the earlier parents start saving.
Don’t sabotage your retirement accounts in order to shield your student from financial obligations. Students have access to low-interest loans, so it may be better to help your student pay off these debts than neglecting your personal future plans.
