Formative Assessment That Works

You’ve heard about formative assessment and its impact on student achievement. How is it designed to be carried out in the classroom?

This short, one-credit, online course will deepen participants’ understanding of the formative assessment process and help them gain the skills to implement it confidently.

This course makes use of the Teaching That Works instructional model. This model is based upon research-based professional development practice.

Formative Assessment That Works utilizes the following instructional methods:

• • • Job-embedded: Participants will apply the formative assessment process in their own classroom and with their own students. That way it can be tried out immediately and tailored to fit each teacher’s needs.
    • Collaborative: Participants will refine their understandings, discover applications, and reflect on their practice with colleagues. Participants may converse online via convenient written forum discussions, or through computer-aided, face-to-face technology.
    • Practical: After learning about the formative assessment process and seeing it modeled, the participant creates his/her own formative assessment lesson and puts it into practice.
  • • Reflective: The teacher and instructor review the lesson and discuss what went well, what can be better, and how to improve.
