Peter Mathwig
A grade 2-3 teacher at St. Peter-Weyauwega WI, Peter Mathwig chose the Instruction emphasis, noting, “I wanted to learn new ways of becoming a better teacher in the classroom.”
Although he’s only taken one class so far, he can already see the blessings: “The courses are very applicable to the teaching ministry in our WELS schools. I can use the information I learned right away in the classroom. And my classmates understand the kind of school I’m in and can offer advice and share their experiences.”
In Weyauwega, Peter also coaches volleyball, basketball, and track, and facilitates the school geography bee. “I enjoy teaching God’s little lambs about our Savior,” he says. “It’s great to see the children singing in church, praising God for all that he has done for us. And even though I teach in the lower grades, I get to work with the older students through coaching.”
He enjoys being outdoors and participating in athletics—as well as cheering for all the Wisconsin sports teams.
“I’m usually a quiet and reserved person,” he adds, “but I can still be a leader through my actions both in the classroom and outside of the school.”
MLC’s master’s program is helping him do just that.
