Description: Library student workers will provide library service to the campus family in one of a number of roles, such as circulation, lower-level services, interlibrary loan, cataloging, or book shelving. Depending on the specific role, duties may include, but are not limited to: opening and closing the library, providing building supervision on evenings and weekends, checking books in and out, processing holds and interlibrary loan materials, shelving books and other materials, conducting inventory, assisting patrons with finding materials and other library-related questions, processing new materials, accepting payment for fines and services, creating promotional displays, using and assisting patrons with library equipment, performing data entry and catalog searches, and other tasks as assigned by the supervisor. Student workers will be supervised by one of the librarians and/or the library director.

Library Lead Student Worker Description: In addition to the duties of the library student worker, the library student worker lead assesses student workers’ availability, composes a workable semester schedule of student workers, ensures that all student worker shifts in the respective areas are covered, trains new student workers, and provides support to fellow library workers.

  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to accept responsibility and work independently
  • Ability to multitask between library projects and immediate patron needs
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn the Library of Congress classification system
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn the library’s computer system
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn the library’s databases, collections, and other relevant information
  • Maintain patron confidentiality and follow other library policies
  • Effective skills to communicate professionally with library staff, other student workers, and all library users

Qualifications for Library Student Worker Lead:

  • Qualifications listed above for the library student worker, and
  • Possess and exhibit leadership qualities
  • Be well-organized and self-disciplined
  • Preferred: Prior experience as a library student worker at MLC

Minimum age for employment:  Individual must be at least 16 years of age or older.

Employment dates:  January 23, 2025 to May 16, 2025 (2nd Semester of 2024-2025)

Working hours and days:  Generally Sunday through Saturday, 10 to 12 hours per week; shifts also include semester examination weeks.

Regular or Occasional: Regular

Student Life policies state: student employees may only have one regular job and may not work more than 19 hours per week.

Salary:  $11.85 per hour ($12.85 per hour for the Lead Upper Level Service Worker, and $12.85 per hour for the Lead Lower Level Service Worker)

Available positions: 1 (may include: desk workers on both levels, book shelver, interlibrary loan assistant, cataloger, special projects assistant)
