Demonstrating WELS Principal Standard Competencies
Candidates select one of the following paths to demonstrate the WELS Principal Standards.
Path One
Complete the Martin Luther College Master of Science in Educational Administration Program for Principals. This program is aligned to the WELS Principal Standards.
Path Two
Work through the MLC Office of Ministry Certification to demonstrate competence in the WELS Principal Standards through any combination of the following methods:
- Graduate Leadership Degrees: Candidates may submit official transcripts of earned school leadership degrees for comparison to the WELS Principal Standards.
- Graduate Coursework: Candidates may submit official transcripts of graduate-level leadership courses taken at MLC or another institution of higher learning for comparison to equivalent courses in MLC’s MS Educational Administration program. Course descriptions and syllabi may be requested.
- Experience through prior learning assessment (PLA): Candidates with previous or current WELS principal experience may already meet some WELS Principal Standards through practical experiences and/or trainings. These experiences and trainings can be used to demonstrate competency in the WELS Principal Standards. Such experiences will be demonstrated through a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). A Prior Learning Assessment enables the candidate to organize his experiences and learning and have a team of three evaluators determine whether these experiences demonstrate required competencies.
