Applications for the renewal of a Minnesota license are submitted through an online licensing system set up by the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB). All licenses expire on June 30 of the year of expiration. You must provide verification of having met the renewal requirements stated on the expiring license.

Renewal Process Step 1: Submit Clock Hours for Approval

WELS Teachers Teaching/Living in Minnesota 

Use your local school district’s Clock Hour Form to record each continuing education experience.

Submit the form along with certificate, grade card, or transcript to your local License Renewal Committee.

WELS Teachers Teaching/Living Outside of Minnesota (but have taught within Minnesota during the past 5 years)

Use the Clock Hour Form from the Minnesota school district you had previously taught in to record each continuing education experience.

Submit the form along with certificate, grade card, or transcript to the License Renewal Committee in the Minnesota school district where you had previously taught.

WELS Teachers Teaching/Living Outside of Minnesota (with no years of teaching in the state of Minnesota)

Clock Hour Submission for Individuals Who Live Outside of Minnesota with certificate, grade card, or transcript and a Clock Hour Approval Application Form may be submitted to:

Renewal Process Step 2: Renewal Application

Once you have completed all renewal requirements and they are approved, you will receive an email from PELSB to renew your license online.

Follow the screen prompts in PELSB’s Online License Renewal System.

All applicants are required to fully complete the Conduct Review screens. If you have existing or pending convictions, complete the following information for each instance:

  • Convicted of currently charged with
  • Level of offense
  • Date of offense
  • Name of arresting agency
  • Court jurisdiction

If you are now or were ever on probation as part of the sentence imposed in this matter, the following information is also needed: If you are now or were ever on probation as part of the sentence imposed in this matter, the following information is also needed:

  • Plea and conditions of probation, if any
  • Date of release from probation
  • If still on probation, name of probation officer
  • If still on probation, telephone number of probation officer
  • Details of the incident
