SUMMARY

Martin Luther College (MLC) is looking for a reliable and detail-oriented Dormitory Custodian to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and overall environment of the female dormitories. This vital role ensures that our students feel comfortable and at home during their time at MLC. As a dormitory custodian, you will take full ownership of your assigned dormitories, performing cleaning duties, restocking supplies, and maintaining a hygienic space. While the dormitories are the primary responsibility, this position also supports the broader Facilities Department as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routing cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting floors and surfaces.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, breakrooms, and other common areas; ensure supplies are stocked.
  • Empty trash and recycling bins, disposing of waste properly.
  • Clean windows, mirrors, glass, and other reflective surfaces.
  • Operate and maintain all cleaning equipment.
  • Monitor inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment; notify the lead when supplies are low.
  • Report facility or safety issues to the lead or appropriate personnel.
  • Follow all safety procedures when using cleaning chemicals and operating equipment.
  • Respond promptly to spills or other cleaning emergencies.
  • Assist with setup, takedown, and furniture moves for events or meetings.
  • Support sporting and campus events as needed, including occasional nights and weekends.
  • Maintain exterior walkways within 20 feet of entrances, including snow removal in winter.
  • Secure buildings when not in use.
  • Use ladders when necessary to clean walls or equipment beyond normal reach.
  • Communicate effectively via phone, text, email, and in-person.
  • Coordinate with the lead to select, hire, and schedule dormitory student workers.
  • Supervise, direct, and work alongside the student employees.
  • Launder rags, dust-mops, and wet-mops as needed.
  • Maintain small equipment for student usage.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Facilities Department.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Knowledge of proper cleaning techniques and safe handling of cleaning chemicals.
  • Familiarity with cleaning equipment and appliances or willingness to learn.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of one year related experience in a custodial, janitorial, or similar role.
  • General computer knowledge.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Regularly required to walk, sit, stand, balance, bend, kneel, push or pull, crawl, squat, climb, twist, and turn.
  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and manipulate objects, tools, or controls.
  • Be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds regularly, and 80 pounds occasionally.
  • Requires repetitive motions using hands and arms, legs and feet, including twisting, balancing, moving side to side, and maintaining a stationary position.
  • Occasionally, climb a ladder and work while standing on a ladder.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & BENEFITS

  • This position works on-site, generally in the female dormitories.
  • Position has regular contact with dust, dirt, debris, and other materials.
  • Routine use of disinfectants, detergents, and floor-care products. Proper PPE is required.
  • Occasional exposure to strong odors associated with cleaning products, restrooms, and waste areas.
  • Exposure to noise, inclement weather, heat, and cold.
