SUMMARY

Martin Luther College (MLC) is seeking a highly skilled tradesperson to serve as the primary Construction specialist within the Facilities Department. Through expert carpentry, construction, and maintenance work, this position helps provide a safe, functional, welcoming, and well-maintained campus where students feel comfortable and at home while preparing for ministry. This role supports construction and renovation projects, performs preventative maintenance and repairs across college facilities and building systems, and participates in the rotating on-call boiler operator schedule.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, coordinate, and complete carpentry, construction, renovation, and remodeling projects, including estimating and material procurement through final installation.
  • Interpret blueprints and coordinate with vendors, contractors, architects, and inspectors.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on buildings, furnishings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, plumbing, electrical systems, doors, windows, locks, and related infrastructure.
  • Operate and maintain construction tools, maintenance equipment, and campus vehicles.
  • Respond to work orders with quality workmanship, safety, and service.
  • Participate in the rotating on-call boiler operator schedule, including monitoring building systems,
    responding to maintenance emergencies, and maintaining boiler operations through inspections, testing,
    and documentation.
  • Maintain organized work areas and follow safety procedures.
  • Assist with snow removal, freight deliveries, and inventory management.
  • Lead construction and renovation projects by coordinating work and guiding project team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Facilities Department.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Vocational, technical, or associate degree in construction, building maintenance, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in carpentry, construction, building maintenance, or a related trade.
  • Experience leading construction or renovation projects.
  • General computer knowledge.

Preferred:

  • Strong knowledge of building codes and regulations, or willingness to pursue.
  • 3+ years of maintenance experience, boiler operations, electrical, plumbing, lock and lock repair, and HVAC.
  • General Contractors License.
  • Chief Class C Boiler Operator License or willingness to obtain

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Regularly required to walk, sit, stand, balance, bend, kneel, push or pull, crawl, squat, climb, twist, and turn.
  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and manipulate objects, tools, or controls.
  • Be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds regularly, and 80 pounds occasionally.
  • Requires the ability to operate hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, ladders, and lifts safely.
  • Frequently required to work at heights, including while standing on ladders, lifts, or elevated surfaces.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & BENEFITS

  • This position works on-site with regular exposure to construction areas, noise, dust, dirt, debris, and other materials.
  • This position requires irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and extended hours, to support snow removal and project needs.
  • Exposure to inclement weather, heat, and cold.
  • Regular use of construction tools, equipment, and materials. Proper PPE is required.
  • Participates in a 24-hour on-call boiler operator rotation, including carrying the on-call cell phone and responding promptly to after-hours maintenance emergencies.
  • On-call hours are paid at $4.00 per hour for carrying the on-call cell phone. Call-backs are paid at time and a half, with a two-hour minimum; additional time worked beyond the minimum is paid at actual time.
