His first assignment after Seminary was as a tutor at Northwestern College, where he served as an instructor in history. In 1992, he was assigned to start an exploratory mission congregation in Columbia, Maryland. He returned to Northwestern during the 1994 school year to teach history and religion courses. Because of his teaching duties in the field of history, he pursued and received an M.A. in history from Minnesota State University, Mankato. The focus of his thesis project related to German Lutheran immigration and the insights that can be gained from the way subsequent generations maintained the history of their forebears.
Prof. Koelpin also serves as the head coach of the men’s soccer team at MLC. He and his wife, Rebecca, have four children – two girls (Kristi and Abigail) and two boys (Joshua and Joel).
