You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. 2 Corinthians 3:2

The Competency-Based Theology Education (CBTE) Minor application requires a letter of reference. The letter of reference serves two purposes. It demonstrates your connection to a WELS or WELS-affiliated church body and shares the ways you are currently living your faith in your mission field.

We want to know that you have someone at your congregation or school praying for you and cheering you on as you journey through your courses. We know how hard it can be to balance work, life, and school and we want to be sure that you have a person of faith to turn to, both to pray with you and for you. It is important, then, that you select a church leader, school principal, or teacher who you know you can turn to for support.

We also want to know a bit more about you and your sense of calling to serve as a WELS teacher. The person you ask to write your letter of reference should be someone who knows you well, knows your interests in serving in the public ministry, and can speak to your gifts, talents, and abilities. The letter should be about a page in length.

Letters of reference should be submitted by the person you asked to write the letter as signed PDF attachment to an email sent from their church or school email to admissions@mlc-wels.edu.

If you would like to ask someone who is not currently serving as a church leader, school principal, or teacher to serve as your reference, please contact the Director of Nontraditional Education to discuss your request. An application to participate in the CBTE program is not complete without a letter of reference.
