There are many paths at MLC for returning adult learners to follow to serve in the WELS public ministry in our schools and classrooms. Each path encourages learners to grow in their faith, develop their skills as Christian educators, and serve God’s kingdom. The three most often followed paths are outlined here.
Do you have some college, and perhaps even a degree, but do not have an education degree or valid teaching license?
The CBTE Minor is a sequence of six, online courses that fulfill the MLC Theology Minor requirement. All elementary education graduates of MLC complete these six courses as part of their studies to grow their faith through a close study of Scripture and deepen their understanding of WELS doctrine. Completion of these courses prepares you to assist licensed teachers and support students in our Christian classrooms. Learners who serve as Sunday or VBS vounteers or facilitate small group or adult Bible studies may also find this course of study rewarding.
Did you graduate from DMLC or MLC with an elementary education degree but did not apply for a teaching license?
MLC’s Post-baccalaureate program is open to teachers who have graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College (DMLC) or Martin Luther College (MLC) with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. The intent of this program is to enable veteran teachers to be eligible for their initial Minnesota teaching license or add-on to an existing Minnesota license. A complete audit of all of your transcripts, including any continuing education courses, and your professional experiences—both in Lutheran schools and in public schools, will result in an individualized licensure requirements plan.
Do you already have a teaching degree and a valid teaching license?
Then, the best option for you would be to work with your local WELS Lutheran elementary school (LES) and determine if you might be a good fit for their teaching needs. The principal and pastor may encourage you to begin K-16 Ministry Certification. This course of study is provided online through our noncredit programming. Courses provide a solid foundation in our shared faith, focusing on Scripture and doctrine, to prepare you to lead elementary students in their Bible studies.
