Männerchor

Männerchor is the men’s choral ensemble at Martin Luther College, offering students the opportunity to strengthen their musical abilities, grow in faith, and proclaim God’s Word through singing in rehearsals, campus worship services, concerts, and occasional off-campus performances.

The ensemble’s repertoire draws from a broad spectrum of sacred music, spanning historical traditions and contemporary choral literature. Special emphasis is placed on works particularly suited to men’s voices, including forms of chant (Gregorian, Anglican, and others), both historic and modern liturgical music, and close-harmony styles.

Membership is open to all male students by audition or consent of the conductor. This course fulfills requirements in various degree programs and is elective for other students.

  • History

Over the years, the name of the male choral ensemble at MLC has changed, first from Male Choir to Men’s Choir, and now to Männerchor. The name Männerchor recognizes the historic roots of MLC and the choir, as well as that of the greater New Ulm community and the WELS. For example, this name appears on programs from the early 1900s, when the first choir (a Männerchor) was formally established on campus. The term Männerchor further connotes the camaraderie and fellowship which are a unique part of this ensemble.
