RANGE: $16.50 – $19.50

SUMMARY

Martin Luther College (MLC) is seeking a dependable Grounds Worker to help maintain a safe, attractive, and functional environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and college activities. This position supports grounds care, landscaping, athletic fields, seasonal needs, snow removal, equipment care, and grounds projects.

This role is a good fit for someone who enjoys working outdoors, appreciates variety in their work throughout the seasons, and values contributing to a well-maintained and manicured space. The successful candidate works well independently and with others, takes initiative, and brings care and attention to the spaces that students, workers, and visitors experience every day.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain college grounds, including lawns, turf, landscaping, sidewalks, and exterior areas.
  • Perform seasonal grounds care, including leaf removal, watering, and snow and ice removal.
  • Maintain athletic fields and prepare outdoor spaces for campus activities and events.
  • Operate and maintain grounds equipment and vehicles, including large and small engine equipment.
  • Assist with landscaping and grounds projects, including planting, tree and plant removal, mulching, and stonework.
  • Assist with directing, training, and overseeing student and summer workers.
  • Communicate grounds, equipment, and maintenance needs to the Grounds Lead.
  • Maintain required licenses and follow safety practices, including proper use of PPE.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of horticulture, landscaping practices, turf care, and related materials.
  • Experience operating grounds equipment and vehicles.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of two years of related experience in grounds, landscaping, or similar role.
  • Light mechanical skills and experience performing routine equipment maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of fertilizer and pesticide use related to turf management.
  • General computer knowledge.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Regularly required to walk, stand, bend, kneel, reach, climb, twist, turn, and perform repetitive movements.
  • Ability to routinely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 85 pounds.
  • Ability to operate and frequently mount and dismount light to heavy grounds equipment and use ladders and aerial lifts at varying heights.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & BENEFITS

  • This position works on-site, primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Position has regular contact with dust, dirt, debris, and other materials, as well as exposure to noise, inclement weather, heat, and cold. Proper PPE is required.
