SUMMARY

The Resource Development Counselor serves the college by implementing strategies for the advancement and support of the MLC mission according to principles of biblical stewardship.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities and duties of the position shall include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Communicate effectively via phone, email and in person.
  • Maintain and work with a donor portfolio of at least 150 donors; nurturing and cultivating them by multiple contacts including personal visits.
  • Travel occurs in the five-state region, with up to 10% of travel resulting in overnight travel and other travel as daytrips. All travel will be in coordination with the Vice President for Mission Advancement.
  • Assist in supporting all campaigns, whether annual or capital in nature.
  • Foster and maintain a cooperative working relationship with the MLC designated Christian Giving Counselor (CGC) and the rest of the WELS Ministry of Christian Giving (MCG) staff.
  • Work with MLC Public Relations and Alumni Director to promote the mission of the college.
  • Schedule and implement regular presentations to constituent groups and staff MLC booths at conferences and conventions to raise awareness of MLC’s mission.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as required by the Mission Advancement Office and WELS MCG.
  • Interact on a regular basis with faculty and staff to build relationships and stay apprised of MLC needs.
  • Serve on the Thankathon committee with members from the MLC junior class, the Director of Alumni Relations, and the Director of Public Relations.
  • Use Raiser’s Edge to enter all action records when communicating with individuals and groups and to produce queries and reports as necessary for doing development work.
  • Participates in continuing education to stay current with philanthropy and Mission Advancement activities.
  • Ensure that all assigned donor and congregational gifts are recognized by phone or by letter.
  • Implements, publicize and grow the MLC Outreach and Legacy Society (SOLA).
  • Maintains community involvement and outreach with MLC-related campus-tours and city tours.
  • Conduct other job-related duties and functions as assigned.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • An active member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) or church body in fellowship with the WELS.

  • Strong understanding of MLC’s Mission and Focus and the ability to carry out that mission in daily responsibilities both on and off-campus.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills with strong attention to detail and time-management skills to meet deadlines.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, including problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information appropriately while abiding by privacy laws.

  • Excellent skills and proficient experience with Google programs, Microsoft Office Suites including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Publisher.
  • Familiarity with constituent relationship management (CRM) database software such as Raiser’s Edge.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.
  • Prior experience in marketing, recruiting, philanthropy, financial planning, admissions, or higher education is preferred.
  • Minimum of four years related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong understanding, knowledge of and support for MLC and the WELS is preferred.
  • Previous administrative experience or related work is preferred.
  • Background in financial planning and/or advancement work is necessary.
  • Willingness to serve and encourage in a philanthropic approach and ability to pursue ongoing professional development in an effort to grow charitable giving.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, and talk or hear, walk, sit, stand, bend and kneel. This individual is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, manipulate objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. The position requires frequent mobility, with regular minimum physical exertion and occasional moderate physical exertion with ability to maintain balance, walk and talk while walking backwards. Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 20 pounds on a regular basis and up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 90% of the work period while operating equipment such as phones, computer, computer keyboard, mouse and similar office and classroom machines. The position requires vocal communication by means of the spoken word, and hearing is required to perceive information. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually low. Travel, irregular hours, evening, and weekend hours are required for up to 25% of the position. This position is authorized for telecommuting beyond regularly stated office hours. This position is not authorized for permanent telecommuting. This position may apply for short-term telecommuting during regularly stated office hours with consideration for essential in-person responsibilities. This position requires the campus extension to be call forwarded to the corporate cellphone assigned to this position.

COMPENSATION

Salary is negotiable and commensurate with responsibilities and experience. This is a 1.00 FTE, year-round, exempt salaried position with benefits. This position is provided a corporate cellphone or monthly reimbursement for use of a personal cellphone.
