Immigration and Visa Regulations

The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a web-based system for maintaining information regarding international students in the United States. This site has information related to the SEVIS fee, visa application and arrival in the U.S., maintaining student status and other resources.

The Study in the States website is also a valuable resource for you before, during, and after your studies in the United States.

Obtaining a Student Visa

Students should apply for their F-1 student visa as soon as they are able to (upon receipt of their I-20), but no more than 120 days before the start of their program of study at MLC. You can apply for your visa at your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  See the Department of State website for additional information on applying for a student visa.  Students will need to pay a SEVIS I-901 fee (currently $350) and visa processing fee.

Maintaining Student Status

International students should understand the importance of maintaining their status while in the U.S. Failing to maintain status could result in serious consequences and may affect the ability to remain in or return to the United States.

Students are responsible for the following in order to maintain status:

  • See Megan Kassuelke at the beginning of each semester to be registered in SEVIS.
  • Maintain a full class load (12 credits), making satisfactory progress toward completing your degree program.
  • Contact Megan Kassuelke before (but no later than 10 days after) a change in major(s), a change in address, withdrawal from MLC, transfer to another school, or to extend your program of study.
  • Abstain from any unauthorized off-campus employment, and do not work more than 20 hours per week on campus.

If you have any questions regarding your F-1 status, please contact Megan Kassuelke, Director of Cultural Engagement,  kassuemr@mlc-wels.edu.
