The MLC Math/Science division established this academic scholarship in 2025 in response to the growing need for science teachers in the synod. From 2018 to 2024, the number of assignments and accepted calls to science teaching positions—in departmentalized elementary schools and high schools—nearly doubled.
As MLC Professor Heath Dobberpuhl points out, “A science teacher gets to lead students to a better understanding of God’s creation. We hope this scholarship inspires more future teachers to dive deeper into understanding God’s creation and to get excited about studying it with others.”
The Math/Science division hopes that this scholarship will inspire students who are considering teaching science and reward those who are actively improving their science knowledge and their science teaching skills while at MLC.
Eligible students must have a double major, one being science education, and have a GPA of 3.7 or higher in math and science.
