Ron and Phyllis Byers established this endowed scholarship in 2024 to help make MLC more affordable so that more students can answer the call to ministry.
The belief that Jesus is the sure foundation of the church has been the cornerstone of their relationship, which began in the church and continues through more than 60 years of marriage.
Over the decades, the Lord has given Ron and Phyllis a growing family, material blessings, opportunities to serve him, and the energy and resources to dedicate themselves to their first love: ministry. That love has taken them to many places and allowed them to help in a variety of ways, from fixing up a campus in Florida to cleaning up after a hurricane in New Orleans. They feel compelled to serve and “work while it is day.”
In 2024, the Lord placed a new calling on their hearts. Recognizing the synod’s shortage of workers and inspired by an article in MLC InFocus magazine, they established an endowed scholarship at MLC in the hope of making a difference.
Ron and Phyllis pray that their actions will inspire others to make a difference in whatever way the Lord leads them. The couple remain true to what started it all: “We not only began our relationship in the church; we know we will end it in the church as well. Jesus is our sure foundation.”
Scholarship recipients are students with financial need. Preference is given to Evergreen Lutheran High School students who attend MLC.
