This scholarship was established in 2025 in connection with an estate gift of Gerald (Jerry) H. Gruenhagen, administered by Rich and Sandy Gruenhagen.
This scholarship is in memory of Jerry and Rich’s father, Henry F. Gruenhagen, who received a two-year degree from DMLC in 1930. Before he could complete his bachelor’s degree, he was called to be a teacher at St. John Lutheran School in West Bend, Wisconsin. Henry continued with his education as his schedule permitted and received his Bachelor of Science in 1956 through additional courses at DMLC.
In 1963 Henry was called to Faith Lutheran School in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and served there until his passing in 1970. In both locations, he was a teacher, senior children’s choir director, school principal, member of the church choir, and organist for church services.
He is remembered at both locations for his dedication to his students and his congregation. People saw his meekness as he gave freely of himself wherever his personal support could help others in need. Some examples include transporting students during school days and painting houses of parishioners who couldn’t afford it or couldn’t do it themselves.
As Henry’s son Rich commented, “Our dad’s commitment to his church, school, and children has been a faith model for me. I encourage our family to follow it too. Our mother, Elfrieda, was a constant support for our dad for the many hours he invested in church activities.”
Through this scholarship, the Gruenhagens hope to encourage second-career education majors with financial support.
Scholarship winners are second-career education majors who are interested in teaching at any level and who are studying on campus or online.
