This scholarship was established by the preseminary faculty of Martin Luther College in 2024 as an incentive to students who study the Lutheran confessional languages, Latin and German.
Beginning in 2025-2026, preseminary students at MLC will have emphasis/minor options beyond the non-biblical languages, which were their only options in the past. Incoming students will select an emphasis from the following eight choices: English, history, music, science, German, Latin, confessional languages (German and Latin), and Spanish. The latter four in that list—German, Latin, confessional languages, and Spanish—can be elevated from an emphasis to a minor with additional credits.
With this curriculum change, the faculty realized that many students might choose not to study the confessional languages, the languages our greatest theologians wrote and spoke. To ensure that our Lutheran heritage is preserved among the next generations of Lutheran pastors, this fund has been established to offer scholarships to those students who select an emphasis or minor that includes German and/or Latin.
Scholarships will be awarded according to student participation and performance at the intermediate level or higher, with a special bonus for completing the minor.
