The Andrew and Margaret Madson Scholarship was established in 2024 by their son, Douglas, in appreciation of his parents’ guidance and recognition of their careers as educators.
Andrew and Margaret Madson valued Christian education. Both grew up the children of pastors and attended Christian schools. Those early lessons at home and in the classroom shaped their beliefs and laid the foundation for them to be lifetime teachers.
Andrew graduated from Bethany Luther College in Mankato, Minnesota in 1955 and began his career as an educator at Fox Valley Lutheran High School in Appleton, Wisconsin. He then went to Wisconsin Lutheran High School in Milwaukee. After 10 years in the high school setting, Andrew moved to Milwaukee Area Technical College, where he taught for 29 more years.
Margaret was a 1957 Dr. Martin Luther College graduate. Her first call took her to the brand-new Timothy Lutheran School in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Margaret was instrumental in getting the fledgling school off the ground. After her marriage she served as a primary school teacher at several Milwaukee Christian day schools. She earned her master’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Margaret’s last call was to St. John Lutheran in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, where she served for 29 years.
Andrew and Margaret were blessed in their marriage. They found strength in each other as they faced tragedy together. After a lengthy illness, their daughter, Amy, was called to her Heavenly Father’s side at the age of 42.
Their son, Douglas, established this scholarship because of his parents’ ideals. They knew that true knowledge is rooted in the one thing needful, our precious Savior Jesus. This scholarship is a way to support the teachers who carry this message into the world.
Scholarship recipients are early childhood education majors who demonstrate financial need and who have exhibited scholastic merit.
