This scholarship was established in 2024 by friends and colleagues of Roger A. Sievert (“RAS”).
The Arizona-California District benefited from the faithful service of RAS for 40 years. The families, students, and co-workers he served remember RAS as an encouraging Christian teacher and coach with a great sense of humor and a quick wit. In 2007 RAS underwent a heart transplant. Even in this, he shared his faith with those he met in the hospital. Later he was eager to speak to groups about his experiences and share his faith focusing on God’s special blessing to him. His life with a new heart was dedicated to encouraging others to follow Christ and serve him with their gifts. He continued faithfully in this until his death in 2013.
Friends and colleagues of RAS established a scholarship in his memory that encouraged many MLC students from 2013 to 2024. The urgent need for pastors and teachers in WELS churches and schools caused one of the founders to recognize the need to revitalize, expand, and rename the scholarship. This led to the establishment of the Arizona-California District Scholarship Fund.
Funding for the scholarship is provided by gifts from individuals who wish to encourage young people of the Arizona-California District to prepare for gospel ministry in God’s kingdom. Additional gifts may be contributed to the fund at any time.
Scholarship recipients are MLC students from the Arizona-California District who demonstrate financial need.
