New Help Site Available

Just in time for school to start, we are announcing a new help site has been rolled out to everyone: KnightHelp!

KnightHelp is a new help site where we are going to slowly accumulate important information for students, faculty, and staff over time. Prof. Rachel Feld has been working to move a lot of documentation over recently and more information will be moved over there in the future.

KnightHelp is a replacement for the Knowledge Base and any updates for information stored there will instead go to KnightHelp. So check it out! Use the search box at the top of the screen! See what information is there and reach out if you have an idea for what needs to be added or changed and have a blessed start to the 2019-20 school year!

Thanks, and have a great semester!

2017-18 Sem 2 Network Services Changes

The initial Portal redesign is released

This morning you might notice that Portal looks considerably different. This release is the initial redesign of Portal to better enable usage on mobile devices and while there will continue to be work done over time to better enable mobile usage for those areas where it would be appropriate and useful.

Here are some changes to be aware of:

  • There is now a single navigation area on the top of the pages. Click on each heading to bring up the items underneath that heading. Also, check out Portal on your mobile device to see how the navigation area behaves on your mobile device. Also, visit Home > Site Map to see a listing of all of the areas you have access to on Portal.
  • To log in, you will need to click to the login page. You can find a link in the message near the top and also near the upper-right Login link.
  • We need your feedback. This release is a big step forward for Portal, but we need feedback to help us determine what improvements can continue to be made. This is a long-term and continual project and any feedback you can give on what works, what doesn’t, and what is missing will help us.

We hope you enjoy these changes and we look forward to making more updates in the future!

Filr 3.3 rolled out on campus!

Take Back ControlThis morning the campus witness a brief outage to our Micro Focus Filr instance as I upgraded from Filr 3.2 to Filr 3.3. While you can read about some of the features rolled out with this update, be aware that there are new version of the desktop client for Windows and macOS. Most notably, macOS 10.13 High Sierra is now a supported platform. You can log into your account at https://filr.mlc-wels.edu and download the new desktop client to get the subsequent bug fixes.

If you have any questions/comments/concerns, please contact Network Services. Thank you!

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Coming Soon

Microsoft is starting to roll out the next major update for Windows 10 dubbed the Fall Creators Update. This update will be slowly rolled out to all Windows 10 devices, so just be prepared for a longer-than-normal update process to take place at some point in the future.

At this time we do not know what issues, if any, will arise with this update but testing has started (mainly around iPrint, Filr, and the OES Client). These major updates are quite involved and so issues can arise with software not being compatible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Network Services.

Upcoming changes for Google Calendar

Today Google announced an upcoming major refresh for Google Calendar which will be rolled out to G Suite users in the coming months. You can read about some of the changes coming up at the link above and be prepared for the change in look and some additional features before they are rolled out.

If you have any questions, as always, contact Network Services and we will be more than willing to help you out.

Drive File Stream launching soon for MLC users

Google has announced that Drive File Stream, their replacement for the Google Drive desktop application, will be launching on September 12, 2017. This will not affect your usage of Google Drive from a web browser, but it will bring changes if you use the desktop application to access files stored in Google Drive.

Drive File StreamThe current version of the Google Drive desktop application will be unsupported starting on December 11, 2017 and will stop working on March 12, 2018. You will need to move tot he new Drive File Stream application if you want to continue having the same access to your files stored in Google Drive as you have in the past.

The biggest and most noteworthy change is that Drive File Stream will not download all of the files you have stored in Google Drive right away but, instead, work similarly to Micro Focus Filr by only downloading and caching files you are opening or have opened recently.

If you have any questions, please contact Network Services.

MLC and ALHSO Moodle Upgrade Complete

Taking far less than the entire day, the MLC and ALHSO Moodle instances have now been upgraded and the database server backing both of them has been migrated to a newer operating system. All services should be back online, so please let us know if anything is not working as desired.

Thank you for your patience.

MLC and ALHSO Moodle Upgrade Announcement

On Wednesday, August 2, 2017, both the MLC and ALHSO Moodle instance will be offline for some major upgrades and updates both to the Moodle software and underlying infrastructure serving both online campuses. These upgrades will take the better part of the day on Wednesday, from 8 am to around 3:30 pm or so. Please plan ahead for this downtime as you will not have access to the sites during the day on Wednesday. Please watch our status page at http://status.mlc-wels.edu for information during the day on how the upgrade is going and when service should be restored.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Bob Martens in Network Services.

Portal Authentication Changes Launched

New Portal LoginLate on July 24, 2017, change to Portal authentication were pushed out to all users.

In the past you simply entered your username and password into the appropriate fields and were able to log into Portal. However, where there used to be fields for your username and password you will now find a single Login button. When you click this button, you will be brought to our new central authentication server at https://cas.mlc-wels.edu. Here you will be prompted for your MLC Account username and password and upon entering those correctly and hitting LOGIN, you will be authenticated and transported back to Portal.

Here is a quick video so that you can see the new login flow:

This change has been pushed out to enable some feature enhancements across our services in the future. We are now working on enabling the same sort of login workflow for Moodle and other properties with the added benefit of needing to login once and then you will be logged in across a number of different services. While in the past you used the same username and password, in the future you will used the same username and password but only need to login once and then move between services.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Network Services and ask to talk with either Bob or Aaron.
