Brian Hennig serves as professor of Theology and History at MLC. Brian received a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern College in Watertown, WI in 1990. He completed his M. Div. in 1996 at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, WI. Currently, he is pursuing a Ph.D. in Reformation Studies from Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, MO.

Brian has taught several courses at MLC: Biblical History and Literature I, II, & III; Doctrine I & II; Lutheran Confessional WritingsThe Modern West: From the Renaissance to World War II; and the Reformation Era. He has regularly taught online Theology courses for MLC’s Ministry Certification Program. He also has conducted several Life of Luther seminars for the Congregational Assistant Program.

Brian has served MLC in other ways as well. He was a faculty representative on its Faculty Development Committee (2014-2019), Curriculum Oversight Committee (2015-2021), and Administrative Council (2021-2022).  He also participated in a task force looking into the mental and emotional health needs of MLC students (2021-2022). Currently, he is serving MLC as the Theology Division Chair and on other ad-hoc committees.  Since July of 2019 he has been serving as the MLC representative on the Northwestern Publishing House Board of Directors.

Brian’s ministry experiences include serving as an instructor of Theology at MLC from 1993-1995. After he finished his studies at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, he was assigned to be a graduate assistant to the AZ/CA district president at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Garden Grove, CA.  He served there until May of 2000. He then accepted the divine call to serve as associate pastor at Emanuel Lutheran Church in New London, WI.  He served there until he received the call to serve as a professor at Martin Luther College in 2013.

Both of Prof. Hennig’s parents served in the public ministry of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.  His father served as an elementary school principal in Nebraska for ten years.  He then served as a pastor in Michigan and California for over thirty years.  His mother served as an elementary school teacher in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and California for many years.

Brian and his wife, Grace (Wessel), have been married since June of 1996.  They have three children: Molly, Christian, and Natalie.  Grace is currently serving MLC as Professor of Music.
