On-Campus Employment
International students are eligible to work on campus without USCIS approval so long as the job does not interfere with your ability to continue as a full-time student. Employment may not exceed 20 hours per week while school is in session. During vacation periods you may work on campus full-time.
There are many departments on campus that employ students. For assistance finding job opportunities on the MLC campus, please visit the MLC Job Blog. We also recommend inquiring at each campus department that hires student workers. Departments that typically hire students include the cafeteria, the library, the fitness center, the admissions office, the mission advancement office, and the records office.
OPT (Optional Practical Training) – One year of employment authorization in your field of study post graduation
To be eligible for OPT the student must:
- Have been enrolled, full time, for one academic year
- Be in good F-1 student status in SEVIS
- Be in good academic standing
- Receive written permission – apply in advance of the date of intended employment
What is Optional Practical Training (OPT)?
OPT is work authorization granted by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to allow F-1 students to gain experience directly related to their major area of study. It may be used before or after completion of studies for up to one year per level of study. MLC students use OPT to work after degree completion (post-completion OPT) to coordinate with the call process.
When should I apply?
Be ready to apply 90 days prior to your graduation date. You cannot apply earlier than this date. OPT is recommended by the MLC Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) but final approval is granted by USCIS. USCIS issues the approved OPT with an Employment Authorization Document/Card (EAD) which typically takes at minimum 60 days and often up to 120 days to process. Please note: if your application is submitted later than recommended, your eligibility for a call is at risk.
