Traveling outside and re-entering the United States
Things to consider before traveling:
Leaving and Re-entering the U.S.
When traveling outside the U.S., international students should be prepared to carry with them the following documentation:
- A valid I-20, signed by Megan Kassuelke within the last year. The signature must be less than one year old at the date of your return to the U.S.
- A current passport valid for at least six months after the date of reentry.
- A valid, current F-1 visa (certain exceptions apply for Canada and Mexico).
- Financial information showing proof of necessary funds to cover tuition and living expenses. A current tuition account statement with a zero balance, bank statements, or scholarship letters are appropriate forms of documentation.
- A copy of your current transcript.
- It is also recommended that you print a copy of your most recent I-94 admission record.
- If a student is outside the U.S. for more than five months on a leave of absence, that student will need a new I-20 before returning to the U.S.

Visa Requirements
Many countries require visitors to obtain visas before they enter the country. A visa, however, is not a guarantee of entry. Immigration has the right to refuse entry on arrival. Visas are issued by consular offices of a government. A processing fee is usually required when you apply for a visa.
If you are traveling to:
- Canada
- Mexico
- Since May 2010, all international students are permitted to travel to Mexico without a visa
