Opening Ports

Network Services maintains firewalls for all public internet connections that limit how software can communicate with the outside world. Some programs (online games for example) require additional ports to be open so that they can communicate with the outside world.

You can request a limited number of ports to be open for specific purposes. To do so, please include the following in an email to :

  • Your full name
  • Why you need the ports opened
  • Your MLC Network IP address (for which you need the ports opened) - this could be on your computer or device or possibly the external IP address on a wireless router you are connected to - visit and look for IP Address to find the address
  • What ports you are requesting to be opened
  • Links to official documentation from the game publisher stating which ports need to be opened for their software to work (third party forums are often unreliable)

Network Services reserves the right to deny any requests to open ports based on any number of factors including, but not limited to:

  • Request that would be a misuse of network resources
  • Request asks for a large number of open ports or port ranges
  • Software itself is either illegal or enables potentially illegal activity
