SUMMARY
An MLC Adjunct Instructor serves the college as dictated by course enrollments and is secured by the Vice President for Academics. This adjunct faculty is secured as a vocal instructor. Adjuncts serve the college on an “as needed” basis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities and duties of the position shall include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Communicate effectively via phone, email, and in-person.
- Utilizes a course syllabus for each course, following established departmental and institutional guidelines.
- Design, revise, and update courses and course materials based on new developments and current events in conjunction with the appropriate division chair.
- Ensure student engagement, awareness of course objectives, approach, and evaluation techniques.
- Carry out regularly scheduled instruction.
- Set a teaching schedule around student availability, typically during regular class hours.
- Teach 16 weekly private voice lessons per student per semester during the fall and spring semesters. Lessons are either 25 minutes or 50 minutes in duration, depending on the student’s major and/or goals.
- Provide a learning environment that makes effective use of available resources.
- Objectively evaluate students’ academic progress.
- Submits paperwork, forms, and grades in a timely fashion.
- Mentor and advise students regarding coursework, time management, and assignments.
- Exhibit ability to inspire, motivate, and empower students to think critically about coursework.
- Collaborate and consult with colleagues regarding field of expertise.
- Teach and present in-person, and virtually as needed. Courses may be taught and/or presented in a classroom, seminar, lecture, or laboratory format.
- Review, grade, and evaluate course assignments.
- Stay current on area of study, including continuing education opportunities.
- Model a service leadership mindset in all activities and interactions with students.
- Maintain a professional relationship with students, colleagues, and the community.
- Prepare students for the Semester Voice Recital.
- Attend the Semester Voice Recital and Solo recitals for final evaluation of the semester.
- Invited to attend all faculty meetings, including faculty plenary, division meetings, and advisor meetings.
- Conduct other job-related duties and functions as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Generally, this position has no supervisory responsibilities, but may on occasion supervise student workers, while following policies and procedures, and maintaining standards, efficiencies, and quality of work.

- An active member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) or church body in fellowship with the WELS.

- Understanding of the WELS public ministry expectations and the mission and academic operation of MLC.
- Knowledge, experience and understanding of the transition from adolescence to young adulthood and the importance of such in the development of MLC students.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with strong attention to detail and deadlines.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, including problem solving skills.
- Ability to handle confidential information appropriately while abiding by privacy laws.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- A bachelor’s degree in education or pre-seminary studies is required.
- A master’s degree in music, voice performance, pedagogy or related field is required, or willingness to pursue.
- A doctorate in a related field is preferred.
- Knowledge of and support for the undergraduate, graduate and continuing education programs offered.
- Classroom teaching experience or pastoral experience is required.
- Experience and comfortable teaching all vocal levels and all vocal styles from beginner to advanced is required.
- Vocal performance experience is preferred.
- Academic Advising experience is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sing, use vocal chords to reach a variety of vocal ranges, communicate, and talk or hear, remain stationary such as sitting and standing for periods of time. This individual is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, manipulate objects, tools or controls. This position requires manual repetitive motions using hands, fingers, wrists, elbows, arms and shoulders, legs, knees, ankles and feet, including twisting, balancing, and moving side to side. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms, kneel, and use both feet and legs. Individual may operate musical instruments and may need to hold musical instruments for a long period of time. The position requires moderate mobility, with regular minimum physical exertion and occasional moderate physical exertion with ability to maintain balance, walk and talk while walking. Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 20 pounds on a regular basis and up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 90% of the work period while operating equipment such as phones, computer, computer keyboard, mouse and similar office and classroom machines. The position requires vocal communication by means of the spoken word, and hearing is required to perceive information, hear sounds and the difference between sounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include perceiving the normal color spectrum, close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment fluctuates between low, to moderate to moderately high due instrumental noise and vocal noise, whether singular or multiple, studio acoustics, rehearsal acoustics, auditorium and large performance space acoustics, if indoors. Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required. On occasion, irregular hours and evening and weekend hours may be necessary. This position is authorized for telecommuting beyond regularly stated office hours.
COMPENSATION
Salary is based on the fiscal year adjunct instructor compensation schedule, and if lessons are conducted, lesson pay is based on the number of students in the studio and the lesson length, for this part-time 0.01–0.49 FTE, semester based, exempt salaried non-benefit eligible position.
