BA Dr. Martin Luther College, New Ulm MN

Professor J. Lance Hartzell has served at Martin Luther College since its inception in 1995 as the “Art Professor”.  He has taught a variety of other education courses too, including Foundations of Education and Teaching Religion.  Other duties include serving on the Portfolio Committee and the Campus Beautification Committee, and Chairing the Lyceum Committee.

Professor Hartzell is a son of WELS Missonary, H.E.Hartzell, pastor to the Apache Indians on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in Eastern Arizona, and he grew up there in the White Mountains, attending our WELS mission school at East Fork for most of his elementary and all of his high school education.  Following high school he attended college at Dr. Martin Luther College right here on this campus, graduating in 1971 with a BA degree.  He later studied at the University of Alaska, Anchorage Community College, Central Washington University, and received and MA degree from Minnesota State University in Mankato.

While attending DMLC, Lance met his wife, Annette Wagner of Norfolk, Nebraska.  Together they served at St. John’s Lutheran School in Fremont, Wisconsin, (1971-1975) and Faith Lutheran School in Anchorage, Alaska (1975-1988).  After leaving Alaska, he served as principal of Grace Lutheran School in Yakima, Washington (1988-1993), and as professor of education at Dr. Martin Luther College for the final two years of that institution’s history (1993-1995).  The Hartzells have one son, Luke, who also serves as a teacher and principal in the WELS.
