Library Student Employment

Almost every department employs students part-time, the Library averages a student workforce of 17. We realize that academics are a priority for you so we offer a variety of times and flexible schedules.

Student employees are an important part in the success of the library at Martin Luther College. Students work in many areas of the library. Student work opportunities are a privilege, beneficial to the institution and the students.

MLC understands student employees are students first and employees second. Students are expected to meet their commitments to the employment arrangement, arriving on time, completing work during scheduled hours and otherwise acting with dignity and respect for supervisors, staff, other students and other members of the College Community.

Forms
Job Descriptions	Interlibrary Loan – Student Assistant Provide support for the Interlibrary Loan Manager and process interlibrary loans.
	Library Circulation Desk – Student Assistant Staff circulation desk. Charge and discharge materials. Respond to directional queries for information (phone and on-site). Adhere to library policies and procedures. Assist in opening or closing of library (specific shifts). Assist with general library duties as required. Required to take weekend, evening and final examination week shifts.
	General Library – Student Assistant (processing materials) Process new and donated materials in all formats (books, DVDs, government documents, etc.). Assist in updating the General Library Assistant Student Manual. Perform minor book repair and re-label materials where appropriate. Assist in periodical collection processing, binding, and labeling. Assist with clerical duties such as photocopying, office supply management, and circulation desk if needed.
	Library Page – Student Assistant (shelving books, maintaining shelves) Shelve, retrieve and shift library materials. Ensure correct shelving order of library materials (shelf reading). Assist in maintaining the appearance of the library, keeping it neat and orderly. Assist with general library duties as required.
	Library Archive – Student Assistant (computer work) Assist the archives coordinator with tasks relating to the MLC Archives, including entering information into the archives database.
	Media Center Librarian – Student Assistant Operates a variety of media equipment, (laminator, CD’s, DVDs, duplicator, etc.) for the purpose of providing library media services to students and staff and community. Serves as an overseer of the Media Center in the evening hours. Collects payment for and retrieves laminated materials for students, faculty and community patrons. Required to take weekend, evening and final examination week shifts.

Other Forms	Forms (required paperwork), hired students must complete before beginning any student employment position. These forms are available through the Human Resources Office.
	I-9 Form I-9 Form – Employment Eligibility Verification The U.S. government has strict requirements about the acceptability of documents for establishing work eligibility that vary with each person’s circumstance. For U.S. citizens, the most common documentation provided is either a U.S. passport or the combination of a driver’s license and a social security card.These must be the original document or a certified copy, photocopies are not acceptable. Please use your permanent address when completing your I-9 form.
	Federal W4 Form W4 Form – Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate
	Direct Deposit Form Students have their paycheck deposited directly into their savings or checking account. This allows a student to be away from campus on payday and still receive his or her pay check. This also eliminates the possibility of lost or misplaced paychecks.

There are employment opportunities for positions with no financial aid eligibility, as well as recipients of Federal Work Study Awards. Q: What paperwork do I need to complete when I am hired? A: Student employees must complete tax forms (W-4 Withholding Allowance Certificates) and proof of work eligibility (I-9) and a Direct Deposit Form beforebeginning work as an MLC Student Employee. Q: How do I keep track of the hours I have worked? A: All hourly campus positions use the computerized WebPunch for clocking in and out of a job. You must have a valid network ID and password to use the Online Time Clock System – this will ensure that you are the only person (other than your supervisor) that has access to your timesheet. Your supervisor will provide a brief training on the system when you are first hired. It is your responsibility to verify your time entry by the specified date each pay period so that your supervisor can approve your time and send to payroll in a timely fashion. Q: When will I receive my paycheck? A: Martin Luther College follows a semi-monthly payroll cycle. Paychecks are delivered on the 15th and 30th/31st day of the month. In the event that a payday falls on a weekend or holiday, the payday will be the immediately preceding banking day. Student employees will be paid for time worked on the payday following the pay period. For example, hours reported for the pay period September 15 through September 30 will be paid on the October 15 payday.
