Volleyball Splits Final Day at UW-Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team split the second day of a tournament the Pizza Hut Classic hosted by UW-Oshkosh, defeating Ripon 3-1 before losing 3-2 to UW-Oshkosh.

Heather Danell hit better than .400 in both matches Saturday at UW-Oshkosh

The Knights lost the first set before coming back to beat Ripon in four sets by the scores of 14-25, 25-21, 25-16 and 25-17.

MLC struggled in the first set, hitting -.036 compared to Ripon's attack percentage of .323, but the Knights rebounded to roll through the final three sets. In the fourth set, the Knights hit .438, with 15 kills against just one error.

Leah Nass had a big match all around, leading the Knights with 17 kills and also with four blocks. Heather Danell joined her as a force in the middle, finishing with 11 kills and a .556 attack percentage.

Alex Anthon led the back row defenders with 17 digs.

[UW-Oshkosh 3, MLC 2]

MLC won the first two sets, but dropped the final three in a loss to UW-Oshkosh by the scores of 17-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-11.

The Knights dominated the first two sets, hitting .407 in the first and .256 in the second, but the Titans were able to slow down the MLC attack as the match progress, holding the Knights to attack percentages of .258, .083 and .000 in the final three sets.

Rebecca Engelbrecht led MLC with 15 kills, while Nass and Danell had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, with both hitting better than .400 for the match. Engelbrecht and Danell each finished with seven blocks, while Miranda Maasz finished with 50 assists and 11 digs.

With the split, MLC moved its record to 6-6 on the season. The Knights will return to action on Friday, September 20, when they open the UMAC season with a trip to Crown.
