Eagles Top Knights in Four
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC volleyball team played tough in front a large Homecoming crowd against defending UMAC champion Northwestern, but lost in four by the scores of 25-22, 25-11, 26-28 and 25-19.
The Knights battled back from a 16-10 deficit to pull within one point at 22-21 in the first set, but the Eagles closed out the set with three of the last four points to take a 1-0 lead.
The match turned in the second, when the Eagles scored 15 consecutive points after the Knights held a 10-9 lead, leading to a 25-11 second set win for NWC and a 2-0 deficit for the Knights.
MLC battled in the third, with Rebecca Engelbrecht finishing with eight kills in the set while Heather Danell added six, helping the Knights to stay alive in the match.
The fourth set was close throughout, but the Eagles once again took control down the stretch as they turned an 18-16 MLC lead into a 25-19 NWC win by outscoring the Knights 9-1 in the last ten points to win the match.
Engelbrecht had a big day for MLC, finishing a with a team-best 19 kills and hitting .372 for the match. Danell finished with eight kills, while Rachel Hein had nine kills and four blocks.
With the loss, MLC dropped to 11-10 overall and 5-3 in league play, while NWC improved to 16-8 on the season and 7-1 in the UMAC.
MLC will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, October 13) when it hosts North Central in a match scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
