Defense Key in Volleyball Sweep
NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team swept Macalester 3-0 Tuesday night by the score of 25-16, 25-17 and 27-25.
The Knights showed great tenacity to start the match, scrambling to the tune of 33 digs in the first set alone on the way to a 25-16 opening game win.
After continuing to roll in the second set, the Scots pulled out to a 19-13 lead in the third, but the Knights rallied to tie the game at 20-20 before pulling out the 27-25 win to finish off the sweep.
MLC finished with 78 digs and six blocks in the match, holding Macalester to a .132 hitting percentage. Alex Anthon led the way with 17 digs, with Miranda Maasz, Rebecca Engelbrecht and MacCartney Mendolla finishing with 16, 14 and 13, respectively. Morgan Kumbier led the team with four blocks, while Maasz, Elizabeth Kogler and Sara Willems each finished with two apiece.
MLC finished the match with an attack percentage of .326, including a .459 percentage in the second game. Engelbrecht led the way with 14 kills, while Kayla Schoeneck, Elizabeth Kogler and Willems added ten, eight and seven, respectively. Kogler had her eight kills on only 11 attacks and didn't commit an error, leading to an attack efficiency of .727 for the match. Maasz finished with 36 assists.
With the win, MLC improved to 12-9 on the season, while Macalester dropped to 12-11 in defeat.
The Knights return to conference play this weekend when they travel to North Central for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, October 18.
