Women Clinch UMAC Tourney Spot
MANKATO, Minn. - The MLC women's tennis team clinched the fourth and final spot in the UMAC Postseason Tournament with an 8-1 win at Bethany Monday.
The Knights entered the match in need of one win in its final two matches to clinch the final spots in the tournament, and needed just one try to make it happen against the Vikings.
MLC won all three doubles matches by the scores of 9-8 (7-4), 8-0 and 8-5, with the team of Rachel Niemi and Karina Luthra needing a tiebreaker to finish off the sweep in number one doubles.
In singles, five MLC players won their matches in straight sets. Luthra won every game in a 6-0 and 6-0 win in number two singles, while Niemi and Leslie Klinski won their matches in number one and three singles. Heidi Heckmann and Carissa Kock also won in straight sets for MLC.
With the win, MLC improved to 4-9 overall and 4-5 in the UMAC, while Bethany dropped to 2-10 on the season and 2-8 in league play.
The Knights have one match to play before the conference tournament, which will be held tomorrow (Tuesday, May 1) against Northwestern at 3 p.m.
