Two Knights to Play for International Team
NEW ULM, Minn. – MLC softball players Brittany Jensen (Hortonville, Wis./FVL) and Karla Opperman (North Branch, Mich./North Branch HS) will play for the USA Athletes International Team this summer.
The USA Athletes International Team will be competing in Aruba against other teams from around the world in a tournament that will be held on June 12-19.
“Not only are these women good athletes,” Head Softball Coach Barb Leopold said, “but they will also be great representatives of MLC, the community and their country.”
MLC softball players April Cook (Menomenee Falls, Wis./KMLHS) and Sarah Free (Plover, Wis./LPS) were also named to the team, but will not be able to attend.
Jensen finished last season with a school record .926 slugging percentage, and also led the Knights with a .485 batting average. She was named an honorable mention All-UMAC performer for her play last year.
Opperman also had a strong season for the Knights, finishing with a .466 batting average and .716 slugging percentage from the catcher position. Opperman was the only MLC player to receive First Team All-UMAC honors last season.
Jensen and Opperman are not the first players from MLC to play for the USA Athletes International team. Former MLC softball players Renee Schiller, Kelly Gawrish, Rachel Wilkens, Rachel Kassulke, and Vanessa King were also once a part of the team.
