Softball Swept by Vikings
MANKATO, Minn. - The softball team suffered a pair of close losses at the hands of rival Bethany Wednesday, losing game one 7-4 and game two 5-4 in eight innings.
MLC scored one in the first inning, but Bethany scored five runs in the second to push it to a 7-4 win in game one.
The Knights scored one run in the first on a home run from Britanny Jensen (Hortonville, Wis./FVL), but the Vikings took the lead with a five-run second inning off MLC starter Sarah Free.
Free dropped to 4-4 on the season with the loss, allowing seven runs (all earned) on 13 hits in six innings of work.
At the plate, MLC was outhit 13-11. Jensen finished the game 4-4 with two RBI, while Free added two hits.
MLC was unable to hold a late lead, surrendering a run in the sixth and seventh innings to force extra innings, and then one more in the eighth in a 5-4 win for Bethany in game two.
Heather Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran HS) went 7.1 innings on the mound and took the loss, dropping to 3-6 on the season. She allowed five runs (four earned) on 14 hits in the game.
The Knights broke open a 2-2 game with two runs in the fifth inning on a Karla Opperman (North Branch, Mich./North Branch HS) to take a 4-2 lead.
The Vikings chipped away at the lead, scoring one in the sixth and one more in the seventh to tie the game, and then put together three hits in the eighth inning to score the game-winner. Bethany's offense woke up in those final three innings, as they finished with eight of the team's 14 total hits in those three frames.
With the two losses, MLC dropped to 9-14 overall and 3-8 in the UMAC, while Bethany improved to 14-16 on the season and 7-6 in the conference.
MLC will return to action on Friday, April 23, when it travels to Crown for a double header scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
