Softball Swept by St. Catherine
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC softball team lost both games of a home double header to St. Catherine Monday by the scores of 2-1 and 8-3.
St. Catherine broke open a 1-1 game with the game-winning run in the top of the seventh to beat MLC 2-1 in game one.
Laura Miller pitched a gem for the Knights, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits in seven innings of work. She allowed one run in the top of the first, and then shut down the Wildcats until the top of the seventh, when the game winning run scored on a throwing error to lead off the inning.
The Knights scored once in the sixth, when Amber Krause scored Madeline Scott from second base with a single.
For the game, MLC was outhit 8-7, with Scott leading the Knights with a pair of hits and the lone run scored.
Miller dropped to 6-12 on the season with the loss.
MLC jumped out to an early lead, but St. Catherine came back with two big innings to beat the Knights 8-3 in game two.
After the Wildcats scored once in the top of the first, the Knights struck back with three in the inning, two of which came off an Amber Krause triple to center field that scored Emily Waldek and MacCartney Mendolla.
Sarah Free got the start and held the MLC lead until the fifth inning, when St. Catherine scored three times to take a 5-3 lead. The Wildcats then added three more runs in the top of the seventh off Miller to get the final five-run margin.
Free took the loss for MLC, allowing five runs (three earned) on ten hits in 4.1 innings as she fell to 2-8 on the season.
With the two losses, MLC fell to 9-23 on the season, while St. Catherine improved to 16-22.
MLC will return to action tomorrow (Tuesday, May 1) when it hosts North Central in a double header starting at 4 p.m.
