Opperman Sets HR Record as Softball is Swept at Presentation
ABERDEEN, S.D. - The MLC softball team lost both games of a double header at Presentation Tuesday by the scores of 20-17 and 13-7. In the double header, MLC catcher Karla Opperman hit two home runs, giving her 12 for her career, and breaking the previous school record of 11 by Gena Schwartz.
Presentation overcame an early deficit to win a wild game one by the score of 20-17.
The two teams combined for 32 total hits and eight home runs in the game. MLC hit four home runs, with Opperman hitting two in the game. Katie Kretsch and Madeline Scott both hit one home run.
Opperman went 3-4 in the game with the two home runs and three RBI, while Alison Filter scored three runs and drove in three runs.
Sarah Free came in relief of starter Laura Miller, and allowed nine runs (eight earned) in 1.2 innings of work as she fell to 2-9 on the season.
Presentation used an eight-run fifth inning to surge past MLC 13-7 in game two.
MLC outhit PC 9-8 in the game, but two costly errors by the Knights helped the Saints score eight unearned runs off Miller. Miller pitched the first 4.2 innings and allowed all 13 runs (five earned) on six hits and six walks. She dropped to 6-9 on the season with the loss.
Stephanie Punke drove in three runs for MLC, while Amber Krause finished with three hits. Kretsch also hit her second home run of the day in game two.
With the two losses, MLC dropped to 8-18 overall, and 5-10 in the UMAC. Presentation improved to 11-19 on the season and 7-12 in league play.
The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Wednesday, April 27) when they host Bethany for a double header starting at 3 p.m.
