Softball Sweeps NCU
NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team swept a double header against North Central on Friday by the scores of 13-5 and 7-6.
The Knights overpowered the Rams in game one on the way to a 13-5 win in six innings.
Sara Willems had a big game at the plate, driving in five runs thanks to a two-run double in the first inning and a three-run home run in the fourth, adding to her MLC single-season record total of eight home runs this year.
Maggie Schultz had three hits for MLC, while Emily Waldek, MacCartney Mendolla, Andrea Biedenbender and Kelli Doell each had a pair of hits in the win.
Kathryn Marquardt earned the win on the mound for the Knights, improving her record to 6-6 on the season after allowing five runs on six hits in six innings of work.
The Knights finished the sweep with a 7-6 walk-off win in game two.
Schultz was the hitting hero in the bottom of the seventh, singling home first-year outfielder Sarah Couture to win the game.
The Knights trailed 5-4 in the fourth inning, but scored one run in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to complete the win.
Willems added three more hits at the plate in game two, while Waldek, Biedenbender, Doell and Schultz each added two hits.
Doell started the game for MLC and lasted the first 3.2 innings before giving way to Marquardt, who went the final 3.1 innings and allowed just one run to earn the win and improve to 7-6 this season.
MLC improved its record to 13-12 overall and 7-8 in the UMAC with the two wins, while NCU fell to 3-18 on the season and 1-15 in league play in defeat.
The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, April 22, when they play a pair of UMAC crossover games at Bethany Lutheran College. First up will be Crown College at 3 p.m.
