Softball Sweeps Double Header at UMM
MORRIS, Minn. - The MLC softball team needed extra innings in game one, but came away with a pair of wins at UM-Morris by the scores of 7-6 (nine innings) and 8-0.
The Knights were unable to hold several late leads, but still came away with the 7-6 win in extra innings.
MLC jumped out to a 5-2 lead after six, with Katie Scherer, Amber Krause and Karla Opperman driving in runs for the Knights.
The Cougars rallied in the seventh, however, scoring three and sending the game to extra innings.
Emily Waldek gave the Knights the lead in the top of the 8th with an RBI double, but UMM tied the game again in the bottom half of the inning with a HR to send it to the ninth.
In the ninth inning, Scherer scored on an error after a Karla Opperman single to give the Knights another one-run lead, which pitcher Laura Miller was able to keep in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.
MLC built off the momentum of its game one win in an 8-0 win over UMM in game two.
The Knights scored four times in the first, once in the second and twice more in the third to take a commanding 7-0 run through three innings, and then tacked on the eighth run in the fifth to give them enough to beat the Cougars in five innings.
Sarah Free pitched the shutout for the Knights, going all five innings and allowing only two hits and one walk as she picked up the win.
At the plate, MacCartney Mendolla led the team with three hits, while Free had two hits and scored three runs. Madeline Scott also added two hits for MLC.
With the two wins, MLC improved to 3-9 overall and 2-1 in the UMAC, while UMM dropped to 3-12 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
The Knights will return to action on April 10, when they host Presentation for a double header scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
