Softball Splits Pair in Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. – The MLC softball team closed out the weekend UMAC crossover at St. Schoalstica by splitting a pair of games, losing 4-2 to Northwestern, but beating Crown 1-0.
MLC was unable to muster enough offense in a 4-2 loss to Northwestern in game one of Saturday's action.
The Knights finished the game with nine hits, but left seven on base.
Amber Krause (Mequon, Wis./LPS) had the lone RBI for the Knights in the second inning on a single that scored Karla Opperman (North Branch, Mich./North Branch HS). The Knights scored their second run in the sixth inning when Jessica Henning (Redwood Falls, Minn./Redwood Valley HS) came home on a wild pitch.
Sarah Free (Plover, Wis./LPS) dropped to 6-7 on the season with the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on ten hits in seven innings of work.
Heather Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran HS) and the MLC defense made the one run the Knights' scored stick in a 1-0 win over Crown.
Korb allowed only five hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking one in the shutout win to improved to 6-7 on the year.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when April Cook (Menomonee Falls, Wis./KMLHS) scored Free from third base on a sacrifice fly to put the Knights ahead. For the game, the Knights matched Crown with five hits.
Korb helped her cause at the plate, tying Opperman with a team-best two hits in the game.
With the split, MLC moved to 15-19 on the season overall and 7-12 in the UMAC.
The Knights will return to action on Monday, May 3, when they host St. Olaf for a double header scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
