Softball Splits Double Header with Saints
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC softball team came back from a disappointing finish in game one Saturday afternoon to split its double header against Presentation. The Knights' lost game one 10-6, and won game two 7-3.
MLC was able to get only four hits in a 10-6 loss to the Saints in game one.
Despite the lack of offense, the Knights took a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning, but an eight-run offensive explosion by the Saints pushed the Saints to the win.
Heather Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Luther HS) dropped to 3-4 with the loss. Korb allowed all ten runs on 13 hits, with nine of those hits coming in the eight-run sixth inning.
April Cook (Menomonee Falls, Wis./KMLHS) led the Knights with two RBI, while Kim Matthies (Lebanon, Ind./LPS) and Katie Kretsch (New Ulm, Minn./MVL) each had one RBI.
MLC answered a two-run top half of the first inning by Presentation with a six-run bottom half of the inning to lead them to a 7-3 win.
After the Saints posted two runs in the top of the first, the Knights sent ten batters to the plate, scoring six runs on five hits in the inning. Jessica Henning (Redwood Falls, Minn./Redwood Valley HS) and Cook each had two-RBI doubles in the inning, while Kretsch and Amanda Fogle (Oakdale, Minn./SCLHS) added RBI singles of their own.
The runs would be more than enough support for Laura Miller (Kent, Wash./Evergreen), who improved to 2-2 on the season with a complete game performance. She allowed three runs on ten hits while striking out four.
With the split, MLC is now 7-8 overall on the season and 1-2 in the UMAC, while Presentation is 11-1 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
MLC will return to the field on Tuesday, April 13, when it travels to UM-Morris for a double header starting at 3 p.m.
