Softball Splits Double Header against NCU
PLYMOUTH, Minn. - The MLC softball team split a double header against North Central Saturday at the Plymouth Creek Dome, losing game one 12-3 before winning game two 9-7.
MLC fell victim to three big innings in a 12-3 loss in game one.
The Rams led off the game with three runs in the first inning, and then tacked on four more in the fourth and five more in the sixth to end the game.
MLC starting pitcher Kathryn Marquardt saw her five-start winning streak snapped, as she allowed 12 runs (seven earned) on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work. Her record dropped to 6-4 on the season with the loss.
Amber Krause led MLC at the plate, going 1-3 with two RBI and hitting her first home run of the season.
The Knights jumped on top of the Rams early and held on late to earn the split with a 9-7 game two win.
MLC scored five times in the first inning, a rally capped by a three-run home run by Morgan Kumbier, the first of her career.
The Knights pushed the lead to 8-1 in the fourth inning following RBI from Krause and Andrea Biedenbender, and then held off an NCU rally down the stretch to pull out the win.
Laura Miller improved to 5-5 on the season with the win on the mound for MLC, pitching all seven innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits while striking out six.
MLC moved to 13-9 on the season and 7-4 in UMAC games, while NCU is now 5-13 overall and 3-9 in league play after the split.
The Knights are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 23, when they travel to UM-Morris for a pair of games starting at 3 p.m.
