Knights Swept in Home Finale
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC softball team was unable to close the home season the way it wanted to, losing both games of a double header against St. Olaf by the scores of 11-4 and 13-0.
The Knights hung tough with St. Olaf through the first few innings of game one, but St. Olaf pulled away eventually to win the game 11-4.
Sarah Free (Plover, Wis./LPS) dropped to 6-8 on the season on the mound in the loss, going all seven innings and allowing all 11 runs (nine earned) on 19 hits.
At the plate, Karla Opperman (North Branch, Mich./North Branch HS) continued a recent hot streak with her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left center to lead off the second inning. Amber Krause (Mequon, Wis./LPS) and Brittany Jensen (Hortonville, Wis./FVL) each had an RBI in the loss.
St. Olaf took command of game two from the start, scoring five runs in the top of the first, and scoring at least two in each of the first four innings on the way to winning the game 13-0 in five innings.
The Knights struggled defensively, committing three errors behind starting pitcher Heather Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran HS), who was unable to get out of trouble. Korb allowed all 13 runs (eight earned) on 18 hits in five innings, dropping to 6-8 on the season with the loss.
MLC was outhit 18-5 for the game, with April Cook (Menomonee Falls, Wis./KMLHS) leading the team with two hits.
With the losses, MLC dropped to 15-21 on the season, and will close out the season tomorrow (May 4) with a double header at Northwestern. Game one is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
