Emily Waldek Named First Team All-UMAC
ST. PAUL - Martin Luther College softball player Emily Waldek was named First Team All-UMAC, while Sara Willems received All-UMAC Honorable Mention this season.
Waldek received the honor after setting a new MLC single-season record with 50 hits. She batted .481 for the season, second-best in the UMAC, and led MLC with 33 runs scored, 12 doubles, three triples and a .533 on-base percentage. Waldek also exhibited terrific strike zone discipline throughout the season, walking ten times against only two strikeouts in 122 plate appearances.
Waldek played left field her first two seasons, but moved to center field in 2014 and impressed the coaches around the conference, who voted her to the All-Defensive team as one of the three-best defensive outfielders in the UMAC.
Willems received honorable mention after setting a new MLC single-season record with eight home runs this season, seven of which came in conference play. She also had the fourth-most runs batted in (32) in a single season in school history, and the fourth-best single-season slugging percentage (.760) in the history of the program.
Andrea Biedenbender received the Sportsmanship Award, which is given to a player on each team who best exemplifies sportsmanship throughout the season.
The Knights finished the 2014 season 15-16 overall, and 9-12 in UMAC play.
